Major Partnership to Track Student Veteran Success

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Eric K. Shinseki announced a major collaboration between Student Veterans of America (SVA), the National Student Clearinghouse (NSC), and the VA designed to track the success of student veterans at a national level.

According to a speech given by Secretary Shinseki at SVA’s 5th Annual National Conference in Orlando, FL,

“[The] VA is working with SVA and NSC to create an education completion database for Post-9/11 and Montgomery GI Bill beneficiaries—an initiative you designed and funded. VA will provide information for up to one million beneficiaries to NSC. NSC will then match beneficiaries against their database to determine how many Veterans have graduated or completed a training program. The memorandum of agreement between SVA, VA, and NSC was approved by VA yesterday. This kind of collaboration is critical. The original GI Bill lasted just 12 years; the new GI Bill is now entering its fourth year—the shot clock continues to tick.”

“Recent media reports cite student veteran drop-out rates as high as 88%,” said SVA’s executive director Michael Dakduk. “The fact remains that no substantial national drop-out or graduation rates exist on this generation of student veterans. This initiative will shape the conversation surrounding student veteran success based on research and facts.”

“This database, for the first time, will provide current data of student veterans’ academic outcomes, such as enrollment and program completion," said SVA's research director Dr. Chris Cate.  "It will help SVA and VSOs to better advocate for student veterans and provide a resource to policy makers and stakeholders to make well-informed, data driven decisions regarding veteran issues in higher education."

The tracking of student veteran outcomes has been labeled a priority by other major Veteran Service Organizations including the American Legion and VFW.
