DMRC Monthly Meeting Notes - May 11, 2010

Club Vice President – Jonathan Arciaga suggested that DMRC do a formation run as a way to do something fun together.  There was some positive feedback from members who attended the meeting.  One of the suggestions is the 9.11 Freedom Run in Barrington, IL.  Two distances available to run are 7K and 15K.

More details will be provided as the decision is made to participate.  We need at least 6 weeks of running prior to the race to prevent injury and to enjoy the run.  We will keep you posted.

For those of you attending the meeting, we will be having a brainstorming session on the topic of - What do I want to get out of these meetings?  Please give it some thought, as a club we want to meet the needs of our members.  You have to remember that this club is for you, the members are the ones that will drive the club.  I ask from each of you to make a concious effort to attend.

The Student Veterans of America - 2010 Midwest Regional Conference will be held from Friday, May 21 - Sunday, May 23.  DMRC will be represented by three of our members:

DMRC and the Chicago Cubs!

On Weds, April 28th, DeVry veterans and friends attended the Cubs vs. Nationals game at Wrigley Field.  The bleacher seats proved to be a great way to take in the game, while we shared the experience with fellow veterans from across the state of Illinois. 

The Chicago Cubs donated 2000 tickets to the Illinois Warrior Summt, a one-day, one-stop resource for all Illinois veterans and their families. The summit was held at the UIC on April 24th.

The Cubs lost 3-2, but still a great time... "AT THE OLD, BALL GAME!".

DeVry Military Resource Club - Meeting Notes - April 2010

The April meeting of the DMRC was a fantastic success! 

25 members, 3 guest speakers and free pizza/soda made for a great event. 

The club was fortunate to have a visit by Dr. Randy Plunkett, National Director or Military Affairs for DeVry University.  Dr. Plunkett spoke of the importance of clubs like ours, job resources for veterans and the commitment that Devry has towards its student veterans.

Carlos Soria, HR Specialist from the Veterans Administration, shared tips on finding job opportunities within the VA. Carlos is a current DeVry student and Army National Guard veteran.

Donna Sebok, Veterans Adaptive Services Coordinator for the Healthy Minds-Healthy Bodies program, gave out information related to free gym memberships for those veterans with a 10% disability rating or higher.  For more information, contact Donna at dasebok@ameritech.net.

• Paintball outing - April 18th!  We will be conducting our 1st annual DMRC paintball outing in Joliet!  Ticket prices are reduced from $30 to $10 for club members.  This includes helmet, weapon and ticket to the park!  Details will be discussed at the outing!

March Meeting - Devry Military Resource Club

On March 11^th, 2010, the DMRC held its monthly meeting at the Addison campus.  The meeting enjoyed a solid turnout, including SIX new student veterans representing the Army, Marines and Navy. 

At the meeting, we discussed:

• Upcoming Job Fairs
  • April 24^th Warrior Summit at UIC (See attached flyer)

• Fundraising
  • T-shirts – almost sold out!  It was decided to purchase more shirts, but with a different logo on the back.  T-shirts can be viewed if you scroll down this page.
  • Logo merchandise – we will purchase merchandise with the DMRC logo on it to sell around campus (water bottles, backpacks, window stickers)
  • Paintball tickets – the club purchased discounted paintball tickets that can be sold to other students, clubs, etc.
• Paintball outing 
  • Using generated funds, we will have a club outing at a paintball park. 
  • Possible meeting with other student/veteran clubs
  • Spring 2010 – date to be determined

• Volunteer Opportunities
  • As part of our mission as a club, we want to give back to the community

Following the meeting, several club members attended a FREE Pizza and Wing VET NIGHT at Ellyn's Tap and Grill in Glen Ellyn. The night included live music performed by local musician, Dave Kaz.  See the attached picture – good times!

DeVry University - February Meeting of the DMRC

On February 19th, the Devry Military Resource Club (DMRC) held its monthly meeting.  Topics of discussion included:

• T-shirt fundraising - on campus/off campus
• Advance payment recoupment from the Post 9/11 GI Bill
• Local resources for VA medical/counseling concerns
• SVA legislative initiatives and how we can become involved
